Lisa Hilgenberg has vegetable gardening in her blood – her family’s century farm heritage dates to 1881. The last decade has found her as the Regenstein Fruit and Vegetable Garden horticulturist at Chicago Botanic Garden where she manages 4 acres of edible landscape, curating and interpreting a collection of 400 types of edible plants. Lisa mentors interns from Chicago Botanic Garden’s urban agriculture program, Windy City Harvest, College First-Chicago Public Schools and the French Heritage Society. Lisa attended Gustavus Adolphus College and University of Iowa, with degrees in geology and French. She earned professional horticulture certification from the Joseph Regenstein School of the Chicago Botanic Garden and is Produce Safety Alliance certified. She teaches classes at the Chicago Botanic Garden and McHenry County College. Her articles have appeared in Fine Gardening and GardenDesign.com and other national and local publications, and she is a popular speaker at horticultural events for homeowners and industry professionals. Follow her on instagram.com/hilgenberg8 and listen to her weekly Gardening Minute on WBBM News Radio 780 AM and 105.9 FM.
